What is SpeechRater™?

Modified on Sun, 11 Jan at 3:34 AM

SpeechRater® is an automated spoken-language assessment technology developed by ETS to evaluate measurable features of spoken responses in the TOEFL iBT® Speaking section.

My Speaking Score licenses SpeechRater from ETS and uses its scoring outputs to support TOEFL Speaking score prediction and task-level practice scoring.

Within My Speaking Score, SpeechRater reports help users understand performance in areas such as fluency, intelligibility, language control, pacing, and response coherence, based on consistent, research-based measurement.

SpeechRater is designed to evaluate spontaneous spoken responses in a standardized testing context by analyzing stable, observable features of speech using automated methods grounded in assessment research.

The reports generated on My Speaking Score provide structured results that help test takers interpret their current level and track changes across repeated practice. The goal is not generic feedback, but consistent scoring signals that support meaningful TOEFL Speaking practice and score interpretation.

SpeechRater has been part of ETS’s work in spoken-language assessment and TOEFL scoring research since the mid-2000s, and My Speaking Score applies this technology specifically to TOEFL Speaking practice in a fully automated environment.
